I have been
singing since I was a little girl. My mother and her sisters used to harmonize
together while we were at family functions, and I learned the value of
music at a very early age. We were always surrounded by music of all kinds.
I have no formal training per se, except for a few years in Junior High
School and High School. My first experience as a musician came in Los
Angeles when I recorded a demo record for MoTown records. It was quite
thrilling and I enjoyed the experience. When I moved to Santa Maria, I
joined a band named Split Second and we performed locally for a few years.
Afterward I was in a band named Central Heating, and finally I had the
privilege of joining a big band by the name of the Starlighters, led by
Joe Jackson. It was a wonderful opportunity and the musicians in the band
were a joy to work with. I met Ed through this connection and together
we formed the group Eloquent Quarter. The rest is history!
I have always enjoyed the straight-ahead music style and the song stylings
of greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Dakota Staton, Nancy
Wilson, and many, many others by which I was influenced. Some of the modern-day
singers that I enjoy are Diana Krall and Norah Jones. I also enjoy listening
to many different types of music from classical to rap, but my heart will
always lie with the standards and ballads sung by these very talented
and beautiful women over the years.
Love and hugs,
Katye
